What Should I Bring to a Photo Shoot?

Optimizing your photo shoot production bag is essential to ensure a seamless and successful day on set. Having been involved in numerous shoots, I've learned the importance of meticulous preparation, especially when juggling roles as a Creative Director or Photographer and unexpectedly taking on the responsibilities of a Producer.

To help you avoid the oversight of crucial items that can disrupt the flow of the day, I've meticulously curated a comprehensive list for your master photo shoot production bag. This bag is designed to cater not only to your needs but also to those of your team and clients. Consider adding items based on your unique experiences and the specific requirements of each shoot.

Besides the call sheet, shot list, and production schedule, here’s what’s always in my photo shoot production bag:

Essentials:

  • AA and AAA Batteries
  • iPhone chargers
  • Power strip
  • Extension cord
  • Clipboard/notepad
  • Booties (protect floors or studio backdrops)
  • Gaffer tape

Hygiene & Personal Care Items:

  • Hand sanitizers (mini or large)
  • Wet wipes
  • Tissues
  • Hand lotion
  • First aid kit
  • Gum/mints
  • Sunscreen
  • Heating packs or water bottle fans (depending on the weather)
  • Tampons
  • Face masks
  • Motrin

Organization:

  • Pens and pencils
  • Sharpie (for labeling)
  • Media storage/back-up (1 TB drive)
  • Small steamer (unless a wardrobe stylist is present)
  • Lint rollers

Specialized Tools for Specific Shoots:

  • Museum wax and/or double-sided tape (useful for product shoots)
  • Fashion tape and/or safety pins

By consistently packing these essentials, you can enhance your preparedness for a variety of situations that may arise during a photo shoot. Additionally, reflecting on past experiences and considering specific needs related to each shoot will help you tailor your bag to address unique challenges. This refined approach has proven to be a tremendous asset in ensuring a smooth and successful execution of photo shoots.
